Copa del Rey Final four will be organized in Gijon

The sports palace of Gijon, the "Palacio de los Deportes de la Guía, will host the Final 4 for the Copa del Rey this year, as announced by the league federation. The cup's final round is scheduled for June 6-7. FC Barcelona, local rival BM Granollers as well as CBM Puente Genil and AB Jovellanos Gijon have qualified. Granollers and Cordoba had also applied for hosting the tournament, yet the executive committee decided in the Asturians' favor. However, it did stress the quality of the other applications. The arena has a capacity of 5,500 seats and was built in 1992.

Gijon is the host city of a cup final for the first time; in comparison it was already played just once in the region of Asturia. Oviedo hosted the final match in the 1984/85 season. Not only the bottom dweller Gijon, but also Raul Enterrios have a home match in his hometown. "If FC Barcelona should win this title in Gijon, then that would be the one of the most special cup victories for me. You don't win a title at home very often", said the back from Barcelona.
